Fighters need to stop complaining to the referee when they're declared TKO'd and instead take a look in the mirror. UFC fighters have very poor defensive skills coupled with poor threat awareness. MMA fighters don't understand what worst-case scenario's are in the cage.
The combat sports level of threat and use of force triad should be trained in to fighters mindset as follows: 1.survive 2. Hurt 3. Injure 4.Incapacitate. 5. Escape. When finding yourself on the ground (especially on your back) you need to expect the level of threat is much more serious than any other position and situation in the cage. The reason being is you have minimal mobility. Often most fighters will give up their back when being mounted coupled with strikes being rained down onto them. What follows is the defender is either rolling to their side in an effort trying to get to their stomach and up to their feet. While attempting to do this they are getting hit repeatedly with strikes they cannot see coming. Or the other scenario you often see is the fighter reaching out with his hands trying to grab and stop The mounted fighters strikes, only to take punishment from all sorts of weird angles.
These two types of defenses are not intelligent defenses.most of the time the referee stops the fight because the fighter on the bottom does not know how to escape or survive the current situation.
Fighters often complain to the referee that the fight got stopped prematurely, when in fact the fighter should be more upset with himself then referee for executing a very poor intelligent defense. More importantly their coaches continue to not train for these worse case scenario situations!
When finding yourself on your back a fighters mindset and awareness of threat should be through the roof at this point and have only one objective, which is to face your adversary directly and have the intent and the means to cause as much damage as possible until you can escape safely. They should spend more time practicing on not getting hit when they find themselves in the ground and also learning how to counter strike back with enough active force that keeps her opponent on the fence of temporarily until they can find a way to escape. Giving up your back is a very poor decision against anybody. Trying to use counter grappling alone to stop a powerful swarming attack does not work.
